Enchanted Lion Books (Brooklyn, NY) has announced an exciting new imprint: Unruly.
Positioned to expand the picture book genre with illustrated titles created for middle grade, teenage, and adult readers, Unruly will be breaking new ground in the US book market.
As Enchanted Lion Books founder, Claudia Bedrick states:
“Unruly is by definition ‘unruly,’ living outside of the categories and age groups prescribed by the US book market, reimagining a space wherein the myriad possibilities of the picture book as medium, not age group, can expand and flourish.”
A True Story… Coming June 22nd 2021
The first title from the imprint, The True Story of a Mouse Who Never Asked for It, will be available for purchase on 22nd June 2021. (I receive no commission from these links). Alisson Woods, author of Being Lolita, has already taken a look. Here’s her take:
In this gloriously unruly feminist fable, The True Story of a Mouse Who Never Asked for It explores the power of art-making, the tedium of the domestic, and the dangers of heteronormativity, all within beautiful pictures and tender words. I was enchanted by the pairing of graphic illustration and tight prose on every page. It is luminous and evocative from start to finish.
You can read more about The True Story of a Mouse Who Never Asked for It here.
And if you order before the publication date on June 22nd, you’ll receive a beautiful archival print of one of the images in the book, stamped with the artist’s insignia.
Finally, I had the privilege of working with the Enchanted Lion Books team on the creation of the new website for the imprint. Given the talent and creative energy of the team, I feel confident the future is bright for Unruly books in the US and across the globe.
